Play Reading April

  • Room 2.03 at CREA 170 Nieuwe Achtergracht Amsterdam Netherlands (map)

InPlayers organise informal and free play readings regularly for its members and non-members. It’s the perfect to way to socialise with other theatre-loving people!

On Saturday, April 12, from 13:00, we will get together to read Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry.

Ubu Roi is a wild, bizarre, and comic play that outraged 19th century audiences, but has since been adapted and translated innumerable times. Join in our read of this revolutionary play which overturned cultural conventions of the time and opened the way for Surrealism and Absurdist fiction.

Although this teenage boy’s scurrilous attack on an unloved teacher was written in the 1890s, it still works today as a biting political satire. Over the decades it has been open to many interpretations and adaptions to contemporary life. The protagonist Pere Ubu is a grotesque, crude, cowardly glutton with no redeeming features. The world he inhabits is one of corruption and violence that no-one knows how to deal with. Somehow this monstrous boastful dictator has become king and everyone has to beware!

Location: Room 2.03 at CREA, 170 Nieuwe Achtergracht, Amsterdam.

The play reading will be hosted by Jeremy.
